Adapted from the famous Chinese classic novel of the same title by Wu Cheng'en, a writer in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), "Journey to the West" is directed by the female director Yang Jie. In 1986, the series topped the TV ratings. Based on the actual pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang to India in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the story had already become a favorite of the Chinese people when Wu Cheng'en shaped it into a romantic novel which describes the Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, and his entourage protecting Xuanzang against that is all kinds of demons on an adventurous journey westward.

The protagonist, 19 year old Li Xiaoyao, lives in a small fishing village on the east coast of China near present-day Suzhou. Li lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his aunt. When Li's aunt falls ill, Li embarks on a quest to seek a legendary fairy, who lives on a nearby island, for help. The fairy is called Zhao Ling'er, a 16 year old maiden who lives with her grandmother in a hidden palace on the island. Initially, Zhao is reluctant to help Li, but being an orphan herself as well, she is touched by Li's pleas and gives him some magical medicine.
Li's aunt recovers after taking the medicine. However, Li had unknowingly broken the spell concealing the location of the palace during his journey there. Zhao's enemies break into the palace and kidnap her after a bloody battle. Li finds Zhao and saves her. The duo returns to the palace to save her grandmother but fail to do so. With her dying breath, Zhao's grandmother reveals that Zhao's mother may still be alive and entrusts her granddaughter to Li's care. When they return home, Li's aunt tells her nephew to take Zhao together with him to find Zhao's mother. Li and Zhao will propose their marriage formally after they find Zhao's mother.

The novel is an account of the mythologized legends around the Buddhist monk Xuanzang's journey to India during the Tang dynasty in order to obtain Buddhist religious texts called sutras.

The Bodhisattva Guanyin, on instruction from the Buddha, gives this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples — namely Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing — together with a dragon prince who acts as the monk’s mount, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as an atonement for their past sins. Along the way they meet numberous obstacles that try to stop them from completing their spiritual mission. With their powers and commitment they will overcome all obstacles and reach enlightment.

Alot of the characters have at least 2 roles because of reincarnations.

I strongly suggest, to better understand the background of this story, to read some information about this literature. Read the chinese version in english not the abridged translated version, it's kind of askewed.
