On March 29, SPICA reveals its new repackaged album including “Painkiller”

The teaser image of “Painkiller,” revealed on March 24 via the YouTube channel of B2ment, shows different appeals of SPICA.

“Painkiller” is an authentic R&B song that is written by Ryan Jun who has been involved in hit albums of Lee Hyo Ri, TVXQ and SHINee. These facts highly increased expectations among fans toward the new album and songs.

SPICA’s agency says, “We’ve spent much time in creating SPICA’s new song. We know that there has been high demands among fans for its next song with an impressive performance which also can well show its members’ singing abilities, compared to ‘Russian Roulette.’
That’s why we put devoted efforts to decide a right song that can better meet what fans want to see and hear. ‘Painkiller’ must be the song.”

Having released the teaser video for their next mini-album repackage, “Painkiller“, SPICA is back and ready to hit the stage with their new concept!

It’s just been three weeks since they wrapped up promotions for “Russian Roulette“, but the girls are about to prove that they have more tricks up their sleeves with a dramatic image change following their newest release.

“Painkiller” is a traditional R&B track produced by Ryan Jhun, the composer behind the likes of Lee Hyori, TVXQ,Super Junior,UKISS and SHINee.

B2M Entertainment expressed, “We worried a lot over the selection of their follow-up track. There were several opinions during their ‘Russian Roulette’ promotions, as one side wanted a song that showed more of their vocal power, while another side wanted to see some stronger performances. It was hard to pick a song that combined both of them.”

“Painkiller” will be released on March 29th, and the girls will have their first comeback stage on Mnet‘s ‘M! Countdown‘ following its release.

SPICA held their first live stage on M! Countdown tonight, where they put on a good first performance, matching a lot of their studio recorded vocals live. Sure, they were no Piggy Dolls, and I definitely saw some nerves, but it was definitely impressive and hinted at some great stuff to come.
The vocals aren’t a big shock when you know the background of SPICA’s members. Narae made the top 10 of the Korea’s American Idol, Superstar K, Kim Boa was a vocal trainer for INFINITE, Bohyung was one a trainee for YG Entertainment, and the group’s most prominent member Jiwon was not only part of the original lineup of T-ara –who actually started off as a ballad group– but she was also a member of the famous Five Girls. Despite Five Girls disbanding before their offiical debut, they’ve built up quite a big reputation in K-Pop since all their members have gone on to successful careers — UEE in After School, Hyosung with Secret, Yubin with Wonder Girls, and G.NA as a star soloist.
Another thing that I love about SPICA is their image. They’re not exactly sporting a look that’s shockingly original for “Russian Roulette”, but they’ve managed to make it their own, unlike fellow rookies New.F.O who came off looking like a bunch if 4minute/f(x) knock-offs when they sported a similar concept last year.
We’ve got a lot of new girl groups debuting this year, most notable from popular agencies YG Entertainment, Pledis Entertainment, and DSP Media, but SPICA has already set the bar pretty high.

Here we have – finally! – a debut that doesn’t look down upon its audience (Never mind that SPICA’s actual debut was with “Intensely” – a group’s second-ever track, released just days later the first, still counts as far as this author is concerned.) No more run-of-the-mill bubbly electronics, no more cutesy aegyo, and no more “rhythmic-talking-dressed-up-as-a-pale-shadow-of-rapping”. “Russian Roulette” is a legitimate song in the most traditional sense of the word, a track that wouldn’t pale next to some of the more hallowed songs in recent K-Pop history. SPICA doesn’t waste time going through the traditional hey-we’re-rookies-so-we’re-going-to-take-some-time-to-get-our-bearings phase; they jump right into being mature, confident, and sexual. Yes, sexual.
To use an analogy, “Russian Roulette” would be a svelte woman, with long, flowing locks and a sparkling black cocktail dress, puffing away on a Cuban cigar illuminated by a low-hanging chandelier. The song exudes sensuality, it reeks of maturity, and it absolutely delights.
The sheer confidence oozing from every second of “Russian Roulette” belies that of their rookie status. This isn’t surprising, however, as the majority of members in SPICA has had prior experience in the Korean music scene. Jiwon was a T-ARA member for a short time, and Joohyun was featured in Heo Young Saeng’s “Let It Go“. Although SPICA may be a rookie group by name, their members certainly have the experience to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the more experienced and respected idols in the field.
Their vocal performances are also a welcome breeze of fresh air; their voices are rich, powerful, and – as expected – confident. If there’s one disappointing attribute, it is that it’s hard to pick out an individual voice from the crowd – in other words, the girls all sound, more or less, the same. This could be just a side effect of listening to rookie members with undeveloped personalities, and this author is willing to hold back on that criticism until SPICA releases a full album showing off “many different sides of themselves” (as taken from the Rookie Group Interview Handbook, Section C, line 83.5: “One must always include the line “I want to show many different sides of myself”).

(Listen) Again today, I can’t fall asleep so I just lay in bed
Tossing and turning, then I get up (You know me yeah you know me)
I can’t forget you yet as I think of you, who left after crying and laughing
I wonder if I will feel better if I see you
So I take you out from deep inside my drawer
(You know me yeah you know me)
Are you happy, unlike me? I ask this until my heart is sore
As I hate you so much, I also miss you so much (it’s unbelievable)
My exhausted heart tells me that I only need you (it’s unbelievable)

I crumble down at the repeating days, even I am getting scared
I guess this is what breaking up is all about
(You know me yeah you know me)
My heart that is so broken and bruised hurts so much
I start to cry and search for you again
I’m really scared that I will only remember you forever
(You know me yeah you know me)
I’m in too deep that I can’t forget you
I start to cry and slowly start to go crazy
As I hate you so much, I also miss you so much (it’s unbelievable)
My exhausted heart tells me that I only need you (it’s unbelievable)
